A Family Legacy Built-In
At Brock Built-In Specialists, our story begins over 50 years ago with one man, a toolbox, and a dream.
Ian began his career as an apprentice in Toronto, installing central vacuum systems and intercoms. He quickly developed a passion for the industry — not just for the technology, but for helping people create better-functioning homes. When he decided to start a family, Ian left the city and moved north to his family property in Cannington. It was there, driven by hard work and a vision for something more, that he founded what would eventually become Brock Built-In Specialists.
BUILDING SOMETHING
BIGGER
In those early days, the business expanded to include garage door openers and security systems — always with a focus on practical, reliable, built-in solutions for the home. As the demand grew, so did the business. Ian opened his first retail location in Oshawa, forging strong relationships with local home builders and earning a reputation for trust and expertise.
With his wife Cathy by his side, the business soon evolved again — this time into window coverings. Together, Ian and Cathy began manufacturing vertical blinds, adding another layer to the company’s offerings. Their blend of craftsmanship and customer care helped the business flourish, leading to the opening of a second retail location on the Main Street in Lindsay.
As their product lines grew to include custom audio-video solutions and advanced home automation, the company name evolved too — from Brock Central Vacuum and Home Interiors to the name you know today: Brock Built-In Specialists.
The Next Generation
Like many family businesses, the next chapter was written by the next generation. Ian’s son Jeffrey began helping out during summer breaks in high school, developing a strong interest in the technical side of things. He went on to earn a diploma in Home and Building Automation and completed advanced training with Crestron in New Jersey. Meanwhile, his sister Lisa pursued a business-focused education at Ryerson University, bringing a fresh perspective to the company’s growth and operations.
In 2016, Brock was honoured as Canadian Beam Dealer of the Year — a proud moment that recognized decades of dedication and excellence.
By 2018, Ian and Cathy passed the torch to their children, who now lead the company with the same values it was built on: quality, reliability, and family integrity.
